Start a chapter
Who it is for, what it costs, what is included, and how a chapter begins.
What the parish provides
- The pastor's approval, and a chaplain
- At least three consœurs, with safe environment training
- A place to meet once a month, and access to the sacristy and church for the works
- Openness to the Handmaids serving as sacristy helpers and lectors, according to the norms of the diocese
What the chapter receives
- The chapter kit: printed copies of the Rule of the Handmaids and the Guide for Chaplains and Consœurs, starter prayer cards, and launch materials
- The Lampstand: the chapter's online home, with a membership application link, parent registration and consent, chapter email, meeting agendas, the Works tracker, and the Rule and Guide
- A Lamplighter to guide the launch, with quarterly visits
- Mailings for every new aspirant (a welcome letter, prayer card, and sticker) and for every newly received Handmaid
- Lamplight, a monthly email with news and ideas from chapters across the country
Cost
| Amount | |
|---|---|
| First year, including the chapter kit | $250 |
| Each year after | $100 |
There is no charge per member. A chapter's fee never grows as it grows. Parishes may pay by card or by invoice and check.
How to begin
- Ask. Request information and the full Rule and Guide at GoHandmaids.org.
- Read and pray. The pastor reviews the Rule and decides whether Handmaids is right for the parish.
- Apply. The parish applies online, names its Lead Consœur, and chooses a chaplain.
- Launch. The chapter kit arrives, the Lampstand opens, and a Lamplighter helps plan launch night.
- Receive. After a season of aspirancy, the founding members are received in the first Rite of the Lamp, usually four to six months after the pastor's yes.
